Exercise of the Week #8

Bear Crawl
Crawling is one of the first and most fundamental exercises almost all of us do in our life. Nothing gives you your first since of freedom like the day you master crawling. I do not remember it but it must have been awesome, like getting your drivers license of graduating High School. Or maybe it just meant we could make it about 5 feet to put some random object in our mouth and drool all over it. Either way, awesome.
So what makes this such an amazing move for us? Well as a child it represents our ability to comprehend movement. We learn the ability to coordinate the opposition of arms and legs to promote movement. We also are able to start to introduce many new load angles into the joints of our body. The more confident we get the more we are able to explore new movements like stairs and over pillows.
The bottom line is that crawling is one of the best strength moves we have ever done. I still use it on a daily basis when working with clients, training a team, or playing with my own kids.
The two most common types are of course baby crawling, or the more advanced Bear Crawl. If it is not part of your exercise routine, it should be. As you are doing the bear crawl, try to keep your knees close to the floor and your black flat.
Check out our Kids Week from April 13th-19th where we will go into a little more detail on the benefits of crawling.
For now just make sure it becomes part of your daily workout routine. Check out how much a move like this can impact your strength training routines as well in a post we did in our strength training philosophy section.
