So what is the most Bizarre thing you have ever seen in the gym?

This used to be a great topic among trainers in many of the gyms I have worked at. We would compare to see who had the most bizarre or ridiculous thing they had seen someone do in a gym. There was always the entertaining stories of the guys who would just do bicep curls and tricep extensions so they had this big defined arms and tiny little legs. Some of my all time favorites were watching people nearly kill themselves trying to use the exercise balls for advanced moves they had no chance at being successful at given their current ability level.

Here is a good example of how not to use them but I have seen something similar to this in the gym.

I have also seen some serious mishaps in the weight room. The classic bench press accident where someone forgets to put the clips on and then watches helplessly as the weights slide off one side, then the other.

I would have to say however the strangest thing I have ever witnessed in the fitness world was about a decade ago. I was working at a Nautilus Plus and there was this older (maybe 65) guy who wold come in and always do the same routine. One day he was working on the Keiser equipment (the air pressure controlled weight machines) and while doing the lat pull down he must have got his blood pressure a little to high. He apparently had a recent biopsy on his head and the pressure got high enough he popped the scab off his head and blood started shooting out of it.

I had not been a trainer for very long and I will be honest I caught myself starring in amazement for a few seconds before I rushed over to help him. The best part was he did about 2 more reps after it happened before he realized that it was not sweat that was dripping down his fore head.

So I am curious, what is the most bizarre thing you have ever witnessed in the gym?

I saw a guy who apparently didn’t want to bring a change of clothes, but still wanted a work out, because he was on various machines while wearing a dress shirt with a tie, and slacks…and new balance shoes. And the best part is that he was working HARD.
That was a moment where you try, but fail, to hold in bursting out in laughter.

Interesting story: at one gym I was at a while ago, somehow a bird got in, so then everyone was trying to scare it out. Eventually some people captured it and took it outside to release it

Ben I have seen this before as well. I always wonder what happened when they went back to work. I am not sure if I am impressed by their dedication or concerned for his co-workers.

What Others Are Saying

"My body has not reacted well with working a desk job.  I am only 25, but have been having a lot of pain that has built up over the past 6 months...The cubicle workouts have truly helped, I cant even begin to tell you...so much better! Thanks Scott, love the routines!" Brandon
