Why I love Track and Field

Today I had the chance to attend my favorite track meet of the year, the Oregon Relays. It is held at the greatest Track and Field Venue in the United States, Hayward Field In Eugene, Oregon, Track Town USA. I love this meet since it allows High school athletes the chance to compete at the same time as Collegiate athletes. They do not get into the same heats but their events are intermixed with those of the college teams. It makes for an extremely rewarding atmosphere for the High School athletes.

As I watched my athletes compete in this amazing venue I was able to reflect for a bit about how much I love Track and Field. For me it is unlike any other sport. The varied events provide anyone a chance to explore the gifts they were given in athletics. To watch these kids run and jump and throw is so rewarding. I am a sports fan in general so I love most sports but what separates Track for me is the individual battle that each athlete must endure each time they go out to perform their event.

This battle that the athletes face of conquering self doubt, the incredible amount of nerves, controlling the adrenaline rush, and then handling whatever weather is thrown at them builds such mental toughness. I witness the hours these athletes put into their bodies all to look up at a giant screen in hopes that their time might be a tiny bit faster than the last time they competed and it makes me appreciate good old fashioned hard work.

I also like the sportsmanship that is on display. Track and Field athletes typically have tremendous amount of respect for one another and I believe it is because they know that they are fighting the same battle internally.

If you have never had the chance to go and watch a great Track and Field Meet, add it to your to do list. I recommend a High School meet but any will work. You will not be sorry.

I agree completely with the sportsmanship part. I always see people high-fiving each other after races despite their placing or times.
Also a cool thing about track is that you can always find something positive about your performance. Whether it’s because you got a PR or didn’t get last in your heat or simply because you had more experience with pressure.

I would love to go to watch the Olympic Trials there in Eugene in 2012. My dream though is to someday actually go watch the Olympics in person. Maybe the next time they come to the United States.
