Why I will Not Watch “The Biggest Loser”

I have seen the Television hit “The Biggest Loser” only twice. I remember during one of the first shows of a new season I decided I would watch and see what everyone was talking about. This was truly one of the worst ideas I had made in quite some time. I sat there in amazement at how incredibly wrong the training was for these people. I was terrified that one of them was going to get badly injured or worse as they asked these incredible overweight people to push a very poor and completely inefficient muscular systems to perform levels of training far beyond what they were capable of.

Really I should not have been surprised, after all it was prime time television which means they were far more concerned with ratings than the contestants on the show. As I sat there and watched the episode I saw these poor individuals get literally tortured and yelled at I had this overwhelming sense of disgust at everyone involved in the show. The trainers were simply asking far too much of the contestants and then come to find out that someone gets kicked off each week.

If you are going to run a show where people get the opportunity to change their physical health for the rest of their lives everyone should have the opportunity to see it all the way through. The whole concept of voting someone off is a joke to me. Why don’t we get everyones hopes up and then crush them one by one for any possible failure along the way. Someone please make a show where you take 2 groups and they get 12 weeks to get in shape. Go beyond just the weight loss and test all of the contestants on several areas of fitness.

You could even have them train for a specific competition of some sort. A decathlon of various fitness tasks. This coupled with the weight loss could provide a much more legitimate program that would allow everyone involved to feel successful. I have mentioned my idea to several people and the common response is always that for ratings people want to see people struggle and fail and all the drama that goes with it. My response is watch “Home Makeover”. The show is completely positive and everyone loves it.

I would love to be able to train these people the correct way. Not just through them on treadmills for hours on end but teach them how to have increased muscular efficiency that will help them to improve their overall quality of life and help them lose weight.

You may recall we reviewed a few of the videos from the Biggest Loser Trainers and check out what we had to say about them in our full review.
