Where did our Training Philosophy Originate?

I have mentioned throughout some of the posts where much of what we believe in was influenced by. During the nearly decades I have been in the personal training industry I have been very blessed to work with some amazing trainers. When I first started out as a rookie trainer there was a guy named John Malpass who must have been in his fifties at the time. He was the one guy who really got me excited about working with individuals. I really loved him since he was one of the few trainers who did not spend every session with a client just putting them on the equipment but rather really testing their bodies and working to get them results.

John made me think outside the box. He would take the time to sit down with me and walk me through various scenarios and how we could best make them work. I loved that about him. It has always been a huge problem for me when trainers are not willing to share what they have learned. I guess I can understand in a gym setting a trainer wanting to keep their secrets since you are actually in competition with one another for income. That was one of my main motivations for doing this blog. I want you to have as much knowledge as possible about how to train your body for results.

As time went on I was able to work with some of the best in the industry. Randy Smythe  and Matt James helped to show me the way in how to utilize speed, agility, and quickness training. My weight training coach in High School, Rex Kaufman showd me how to train with perfect form on all of the olympic weight lifting moves.

It just seemed that I was always lucking into the right place at the right time. The luckiest I ever got however was when I metBrian Cassidy from Function Dynamics. He is the one responsible for taking all of the knowledge I had accumulated and putting it into a system that could make every client successful, every time. The only limitation I found myself having was the clients ability or desire to do the necessary work to make their goals happen. I was so impressed by the system that was created and that is the system we are sharing with all of you.

I learned that Brian had worked for a man named Pete Egoscue. It is my understanding that he is one of the earliest to have used this mentality on training the human body the way God or nature intended. I am hoping that someday Mr. Cassidy writes a book. If so we will let you know immediately because it would be a must read.  In the meantime here is a book that Egoscue wrote called Health through Motion. It was the first book he wrote and in my opinion, the best. He has a few others but this one does the best job of talking to you about the philosophy.

Follow this link to check the book out. It is a quick read but it will give you a slightly different perspective on the same material we are sharing with you.

I am hoping one day we will have a book or series of books to offer as well but for now we will just continue to give as much as we can in this blog.

Such a good point about providing people with the training they will benefit from without being in competition with other trainers. When I first began working at the gym teaching classes, one of the other trainers came to a class. I was told later that she was using some of “my” exercises in her Abs class which annoyed me until the guy who told me said, “hey! you should be complemented.” More than that, I learned to share … for the good of all. The only worthy competition is the one you’re helping your clients prepare for!

Patty, good for you. It is funny how often I had that same thing happen when working in gyms. I also laughed when people would tell me someone was using my exercises. I wish I could take credit for inventing the thousands of exercises I use but that is obviously not the case. Keep sharing your skill, it will benefit many.

"My body has not reacted well with working a desk job.  I am only 25, but have been having a lot of pain that has built up over the past 6 months...The cubicle workouts have truly helped, I cant even begin to tell you...so much better! Thanks Scott, love the routines!" Brandon
