Are you taking your Vitamin D?

milk_glass-300Each year we learn more and more about how beneficial various vitamins and minerals are to our body. One of the more recent ones is Vitamin D. Even though it was discovered in the early 1900′s (1919 I think) it has recently become a major force in the medical community for it various benefits.

In College one of my nutrition classes was taught by a woman in her late 50′s. She spent quite a bit of time discussing the importance of Vitamin D and its role in calcium absorption to help maintain bone density. Her mom had suffered from bone density loss and she was worried she was going to suffer the same fate. Needless to say she was drinking milk all the time.

Now the medical community is learning how Vitamin D can also play an important role in the prevention of certain cancers Such as breast, colon, and prostate. Here is an article from WebMD that discusses some of the research being done with Vitamin D. I like at the end when they say to spend time in the sun each day! If I lived somewhere that the sun was out each day I would. However life in the Pacific Northwest leads to about 8 straight months of rain. Its awesome.

It seems the more research we do the more we begin to realize how all vitamin and minerals are vital to the betterment of our health. I am going to make a bold claim and then maybe someone will back up this research. We as human beings actually need all vitamins and minerals all the time in order for our bodies to perform at their best. I am obviously being sarcastic. i realize there already is research to prove most of this. What bothers me is how hard this is to accomplish for the average person. Is it possible to do it shopping at your local grocery store? Possible maybe but very expensive and time consuming to find the right items that are not laced with chemicals, pesticides and who knows what else.

We hope to try and bring you as much information as we possibly can to help you be at your healthiest. We would also love it if any of you would be willing to share your hints and tips for making your life healthy in an unhealthy world right now.

Vitamin D is a great place to start! A traditional diet should give you all the nutrients you need, but gone are the days of eating local, like your own backyard, and eating whole unprocessed food. Take that glass of milk for instance – as it used to be – whole, raw, fresh from grass-fed cows – it had all you needed for growth and health. Since the cows are pastured, the butterfat is rich with Omega 3′s. Check out http://realmilk.com. and as for D – how many of us take Cod Liver Oil daily? You should. It’s the best source of natural Vitamin D and it’s flavored – not bad. Try it!
