People often say that chin-ups are the girl version of pullups, with the hands pronated as opposed to supinated. The only shred of insight I can get from this assumption is that it seems that chin-ups are generally easier than pullups for most people. I guess people then assumed that guys should do the “harder” version of the move while girls do the easier one.
But, doesn’t this seem to point towards some strength imbalances? Should a person be able to do just about as many chin-ups as pullups? And if not, should that be one of their training goals?July 15th, 2009 at 8:47 pm -

I am not sure I would go as far as to say a strength imbalance. The main difference between the chin-up and pull-up beyond the obvious grip position (overhand vs underhand) is the width of the grip. In a chin-up the hands typically are not as wide as in a Pull-up so this will lend itself to being a little easier. The shorter the lever (arm angle) will enable you to have a bit more power.
Also for many years the Flex Arm Hang was used by girls as a measurement of upper body strength. I still use it fairly often so perhaps that is where the girl version originated.July 15th, 2009 at 9:26 pm
